Research and DevelopmentKnowing what your customers, and your non-customers, think about your company, your products, your service, and indeed the industry in general, is really important. Without detailed knowledge you might well be basing your future marketing plans on the wrong information – and that could cost money. It is not uncommon for companies to feel that they are well known in their industry and that they have a high recognition factor among potential customers. But a simple test can sometimes provide results which suggest this is not exactly how it is – and that knowledge can be used to generate a different sort of marketing campaign that can bring in new clients and customers. Research can also be used to give early warning of changes that are about to happen within the industry. For example, if we imagine a company that sells three product ranges (we’ll call them A, B and C) which customers tend to buy once a quarter. A survey which asks (among other things) about customer satisfaction and the likelihood of the customer buying the product again in the next quarter, can give notice about customer attitudes. If 90% of your clients expect to buy “A” again in the next quarter, but only 40% expect to buy “C” you will know that some additional marketing is going to be required if your sales from “C” are going to hold up. To get such information you need to construct a questionnaire, and present it to customers and others in a way that encourages them to reply. In our experience the ideal way of doing this is through an on-line questionnaire to which people are guided via your website, emails and direct mail.
